<"This paper describes a computational study of stratified Direct Water (DW) injection. Here we use CFD to explore the effects of DW injection on Diesel engine combustion to gain insight into the in cylinder processes which make the technique one of the most promising technologies for NOx reduction.">

<" DW injection has the advantage over fumigation of having the liquid water close to the flame and away from the wall. Unlike emulsified fuels, DW injection allows the fuel-water percentage to be changed for cold start or different operating ranges. Although the injection system needs to be modified for DW injection, a single injector per cylinder is used so that the overall cost would be less than a parallel injection system.">

<" DW injection has advantages over other water injection techniques, namely fumigation and emulsified fuels, however is expensive to implement. Additionally, further study is needed to find the best fuel/water percentage for various operating conditions.

The challenges facing this technology are difficult to overcome, however if fuel prices increase and emissions regulations continue to tighten, the direct water injection technique could become a viable option for DI Diesel engines in comparison to DeNOx catalysts or alternative NOx aftertreatments. Willys' Direct Water Injection

I have designed and developed a system to improve fuel efficiency and eliminate water soluable GHG emissions from any internal combustion so adapted.

It simply works by capitalizing on the heat each of these engines release in combustion of its' respective fuel, using it to convert injected water to steam, inside of the cylinder while it is under explosion, which not only adds to the increased torque realized from the fuel now, but also results in 90% humidity laden combustion products.

When these combustion products are then cooled to reclaim the water for re-injection, the condensate that results contains all of the water soluable GHGs that Acid Rain reclaims from our atmosphere, however here this occurs before the combustion products clear the engines tailpipe.

Conceivably, if a variation of this system was utilized to combust the fuel as is commonly used in a home heating system; 90%+ of the heat of combustion is recoverable from the cooling system of the motor and exhaust, meanwhile the motor drives an electrical generator, taking the increase in fuel efficiency to over 200%! Since a second home could easily be heated with this electricity, and there would be sufficient electricity left over to operate both houses independent of the hydro grid!

Incredible as it may seem experimentation with this water injection concept in real time has resulted in a re-shuffling of the combustion equation making it more complete and efficient in total energy release. This was evidenced in the near TNT explosive quality detonations that tore my test engines apart, it exploded with great power and was much more energy than I had anticipated that would be released.

Although this system is an 'After Market' adaptation in design, it could even more easily be incorporated at the OEM stage, and with an anticipated minimum increase in fuel efficiency of 25%, it will be demand driven even after-market, Industrial engines would benifit the most.
